Micro- and nanoplastics are emerging global contaminants detected in air, water, soil, food, and consumer products, making human exposure unavoidable. Due to their small size, these particles may cross biological barriers and interact with cells and tissues, potentially inducing adverse biological effects that are still poorly understood. In response, the European Union has introduced regulatory measures and promoted the development of alternative materials, including bioplastics. This workshop aims to promote an integrated approach, aligned with the objectives of the BioPlast4Safe project, combining ecotoxicological studies, human biomonitoring of polymers, investigation of early-effect biomarkers, advanced analytical methodologies, and mitigation strategies. Together, these activities seek to improve exposure and risk assessment, reduce scientific uncertainties, and support evidence-based regulatory decisions for the safe management of these environmental contaminants.
