Microfabrication of PV devices
Co-organised with Sapienza University of Rome
Chair: Danilo DINI, Sapienza University of Rome

For the development of advanced systems that convert solar energy into electricity researchers are considering new approaches that take advantage of microsystems/thin film technologies. The success of the microscaling of PV systems is based on several crucial factors: diminution of the costs of cell production thanks to the use of a considerably smaller amount of photoactive crystalline semiconductor of high quality, e.g. Si, GaAs, InP or CdTe, per unit cell with respect to those constituting large scale panels; attainment of high efficiencies of solar conversion comparable to those of the best performing traditional configurations; possibility of preparing flexible solar modules that are capable to cover curved surfaces and power mobile systems. In the ambit of technologies for PV those employing metal chalcogenides (CIGS) as photoactive materials offer several important advantages with respect to Si cells: low-light and shading tolerance, high heat tolerance; appealing aesthetics. This session aims to gather all young experts that are involved in the development of materials/configurations of chalcogenides-based PV systems for the amelioration of conversion efficiencies, the abatement of the costs of manufacturing, feasibility of the processes of rare materials recovery and recycling in order to render more sustainable their production and materials re-use.
