ABOUT THE BOOK The engine of progress has changed hands Science is the engine of technological progress. In the past, breakthroughs came mainly from public labs and universities. Today, Big Tech companies are new players: flush with huge profits, they invest aggressively in R&D with an ambitious goal — the monopoly of knowledge. Quantum computing, neuroscience, brain-machine interfaces, space exploration, health, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence are all at the center of this race — pursued largely out of public view. Add that much of today’s innovation stems from military research, secret by definition, and two very different faces of contemporary science emerge: public, open and transparent on one side; private, confidential and inaccessible on the other.
