Achieving Europe’s climate neutrality targets requires not only a rapid expansion of renewable energy and improvements in energy efficiency, but also effective solutions for reducing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors. In this context, Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technologies are increasingly recognised as essential tools for decarbonisation, enabling the capture of CO2 emissions at source, their transport and permanent geological storage, or their conversion into valuable products and materials. The workshop will explore the current state and future prospects of CCUS technologies, highlighting their role in supporting the European Green Deal and the EU's 2050 climate objectives. The event aims to move beyond the theoretical discussion of carbon management and showcase concrete actions, infrastructures, and collaborations that are driving innovation and deployment across Europe.

CCUS in Action: The ECCSEL ERIC Italian Nodes Contribution

The first part of the workshop will focus on the presentation of the Italian Nodes of ECCSEL ERIC (European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure). As a key European research infrastructure, ECCSEL ERIC supports the development of the European Research Area by providing open access to a unique network of more than 100 world-class research facilities dedicated to CCUS, carbon dioxide removal (CDR), and sustainable subsurface energy systems. Participants will gain insight into the capabilities, services, and trasnational access opportunities offered by the Italian facilities and their contribution to advancing research, innovation, and industrial applications in carbon management.

The second part of the workshop will feature invited expert presentations and an interactive discussion session addressing the entire CCUS value chain. Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of advanced materials in CCUS technologies, including materials for CO₂ capture, separation, transport, storage, and utilisation processes. Participants will gain insights into recent advances, emerging technologies, and implementation challenges associated with CCUS deployment, as well as its potential contribution to industrial decarbonisation, energy system resilience, and sustainable economic development. Through the presentation of current research activities, case studies, and open dialogue, the workshop will provide a platform for scientific exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue, fostering new research partnerships and encouraging discussion on the role of CCUS as a key enabling technology for achieving climate neutrality and supporting the transition to a low-carbon society.
